The Banned List for Impropriate English Phrases or Sentences
The following words and phrases are banned from use for all English assignments. Why? So you can be an excellent writer!
thing, instead of saying thing, be specific; say exactly what the noun is.
Colorful. Native speakers almost never use this word to describe a person or their life. Look for a precise adjective.
Sunshiny, harmonious, propaganda. These words do not translate well and sound strange. No not use them.
Stuffs. Most of the time we use this in the wrong way as in “we ate a great deal of stuffs during supper” this word with an s is a verb, as in, Santa stuffs the Christmas sock. Without an s it is a noun.
Homeworks, advices, informations, knowledges, researches, staffs. There is never an s at the end of these words.
Do not use the word study as a noun. We don’t say “I must spend more time on my study.” Better to say, I should spend more time studying.
Firstly, abandon firstly, secondly, thirdly. First, second, third is better.
What’s more.Use furthermore,moreover.
In a word. Don’t use this word if you are about to say or write more than one word.
As everybody knows.Everybody doesn’t know.
No sayings of any type, quotes, or proverbs. For freshmen only! This a habit leftover from high-school that blocks you from learning new ways to express yourself in English.
Besides. Never use besides. Use in addition,or additionally.
You can never say I have ever been to Beijing. Instead, “I have been to Beijing”.
Most of time/most of people.Use most of the time, most times, most people.
It deeply moved me. I was deeply moved, made me moved, very moved, I was deeply impressed, it made a deep impression on me are overused and often sound strange. Instead of saying something made you moved, use more precise words like “the movie made a deep impact on me” or “after watching the movie I decided to call my grandma and thank her for raising me.”
Bright future, brighter future, better life, broaden my horizons. These are over used and don’t use them.
Peasants, feudalism.Don’t use them if you are writing about China after 1949. Use farmer for peasant.
